Intervention?
When is the right time for an intervention, and what is the right format to use? With so many options and variations on fees it is hard to decide what is the best route to take. Here are some basic facts to consider:
-
The whole point of an intervention is to get the person afflicted to see and admit they have a serious problem and need help
-
If they absolutely disagree, become combative, and refuse to receive any help there is very little that can be done at the moment however, the ex-problem drinker who has found the solution, who is properly armed with facts about
himself, can generally win the entire confidence of another alcoholic/addict in a few
hours. Until such an understanding is reached, little or nothing can be
accomplished.
-
Correct family support is necessary however it is usually better to see the afflicted individual alone as the family presence may upset the individual as this can promote a hostile environment causing him/her to completely shut down and become unwilling to accept any help.
-
The family must be prepared to completely stop enabling. (Money, shelter, services, etc...)
-
Yelling at the individual or the use of guilt is not effective.
-
The problem they face has nothing to do with willpower.
-
The family typically needs direction and care as well as the afflicted individual.
These points are not negotiable
When the proper person makes contact with your loved one it is their goal to educate them on certain facts about their addiction and to offer them hope as a person who has recovered and has found a solution to their problems. When this is done properly and the afflicted individual is able to see their truth and has become willing the absolute miracle of recovery can start immediately.
