Family Guidelines
At Solutions of North Texas, we believe that substance abuse is a family illness. Having a loved-one afflicted with this disease brings about all kinds of emotions: fear, worry, resentment and heartbreak, just to name a few. There may be some of you that have had similar struggles in the past but were able to move past them with no effort or there may be some of you that know nothing about addiction or recovery. All of these create lots of questions about what to expect and how you might be most helpful in this process.
Below are a few guidelines you can go by that will help you help your loved one:
Solutions of North Texas provides everything necessary for our residents with an all-inclusive program. Basically, all your loved one needs is clothes and toiletries, and if those are not available, we can provide them as well.
Your loved one may become uncomfortable when faced with this new way of life-it is ok for them to be uncomfortable. They have everything they need.
Your loved one will have the opportunity to recover and all resources will be made available to them. It is up to the resident on whether to accept or utilize this information. Some residents will not be ready to accept this help and this has nothing to do with their family or friends.
In the event of relapse, your loved one does not need to be picked up or rescued. They are adult people and we will place them if necessary.
Sometimes, a temporary no-contact or disconnect from family or friends is necessary. This is usually 2 wks. to one month. This will give the resident time to do some recovery work and is advised on an as-needed basis.
Solutions of North Texas allows family/friends to pay the first month’s rent. We do not allow it any time thereafter unless they are a full-time student. They must hold themselves accountable financially. They will be guided through this process. They must learn to live within their means, which may mean doing without extras.
It is irresponsible to give a struggling addict cash. While at Solutions of North Texas they will have everything they need to sustain their life. They can earn walking around money when they receive their first paycheck.
Solutions of North Texas is on a bus-line and will supply bus passes sparingly. There are jobs available in our area and members of our community can see a doctor. Again, they have everything they need.
Sometimes knowing all of this still is not enough to calm our fears. For whatever reason, we are not ok, even if the addict is doing better. For information on available programs for the families please contact Leslie Wisenbaker
